What is Vinyl Silicone Oil?

The chemical name of vinyl silicone oil is double-terminated vinyl silicone oil. Its main structural feature is that part of the methyl groups in polydimethylsiloxane are replaced by vinyl groups, thus forming reactive polymethylvinylsiloxane. Due to its unique chemical structure, vinyl silicone oil exhibits the physical form of a liquid fluid.

Types of vinyl silicone oil

The types of vinyl silicone oil include vinyl-terminated silicone oil and high vinyl silicone oil. Among them, vinyl-terminated silicone oil is divided into two types: Vi-PDMS (vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) and Vi-PMVS (vinyl-terminated polymethylvinylsiloxane). The different vinyl content in the structure of vinyl silicone oil gives it different application characteristics.

Properties of Vinyl Silicone Oil

Vinyl silicone oil is a colorless or light yellow oily liquid that is non-toxic, odorless, and free of mechanical impurities. It is miscible with benzene, dimethyl ether, methyl ethyl ketone, tetrachlorocarbon, or kerosene and is slightly soluble in acetone and ethanol. But it is insoluble in water.

It has a small vapor pressure, a low freezing point, and a high flash and ignition point. These properties enable it to maintain stable performance at high temperatures or in specific environments and are not easy to volatilize, thus ensuring its long-term effectiveness in various applications.

The two ends of the double-terminated vinyl silicone oil have vinyl groups, which makes it highly reactive. By adding a catalyst, the vinyl silicone oil can react with chemical substances containing active hydrogen groups and other active groups to obtain various silicone products with specific properties.

Its excellent smoothness, softness, brightness, heat, and weather resistance make vinyl silicone oil widely used in the modification of plastics, resins, paints, and coatings.

Application of Vinyl Silicone Oil

Vinyl silicone oil is the basic raw material used to produce high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTV) to increase the strength and hardness of silicone rubber. It is often mixed with crosslinking agents, colorants, reinforcing agents, structure control agents, etc. to make high-temperature vulcanized silicone rubber raw rubber. This silicone rubber has excellent stability and durability and is very suitable for use in occasions requiring high temperature and corrosion resistance.

In the manufacturing process of liquid silicone rubber, vinyl silicone oil is the main raw material for making injection molding silicone rubber, electronic glue, and thermal conductive glue. It is mixed with hydrogen-containing crosslinking agents, platinum catalysts, inhibitors, etc. to produce additional liquid silicone rubber. Due to its excellent fluidity, formability, and elasticity, liquid silicone rubber is widely used in the silicone industry, textiles, molds, and other fields.

To make new materials, vinyl silicone oil reacts with various organic materials such as polyurethane, acrylic acid, etc. These new materials have superior properties such as weather resistance, aging resistance, UV resistance, and enhanced toughness, and are widely used in coatings, adhesives, and sealing materials.

Vinyl silicone oil is used in electronics including LED lamp glue, LED packaging, and electronic component potting. It can provide a perfect sealing function to protect sensitive electronic components and elements for electronic devices.

It is the main raw material of the release agent. Its excellent lubricity helps the product to be demoulded smoothly and improves production efficiency.
