RTV-1 Silicone

RTV-1 silicone is a site molding one-component room temperature cured liquid silicone rubber, which is cured in contact with water molecules of air in non-sealed places. RTV is the abbreviation of Room Temperature Vulcanization, which means vulcanization at room temperature. This type of silicone rubber can be used without special processing equipment or heating. It is cheap and easy to obtain, with good adhesion to materials, fast molding speed, and strong adaptability, which is an ideal material for sealants, adhesives, and protective coating applications.

RTV-1 Silicone chemical structure

RTV-1 silicone is composed of reactive terminal group (OH) polysiloxane, crosslinking agent, catalyst, filler, and additives. The one-component condensation reaction type material is mixed with the moisture in the air, and the condensation reaction occurs immediately to form a three-dimensional network structure, that is an elastomer. The curing reaction from the air contact surface extends to the center of the polymer. The reinforcing filler uses silica with a high specific surface area to enhance the fluidity, adhesion, and optical transparency of silicone rubber. An organic tin compound can also be added to promote the polycondensation reaction of the organosilicon compound and the crosslinking agent. The process can choose different crosslinking systems (polyfunctional silane compounds containing hydrolyzable groups) and gradually discharge a small amount of acetic acid, amine, or neutral compound, which usually is volatile gas: alcohol. The final curing speed depends on the site temperature, air humidity, and the degree of moisture diffusion inside the silicone compound.

RTV-1 Silicone properties

The biggest highlight of RTV-1 silicone is its unique and strong thixotropy, which can be used for sealing, coating, and bonding on various occasions without being restricted by the site. The formula of polycondensation type one-component silicone rubber binding agent exhibits automatic bonding properties to most substrates, such as glass, metal, stone, concrete, and various plastic. For non-polar materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene, the bonding strength can be improved by pre-coating the primer, so that the substrate forms an easy-to-bond surface. Its cured elongation at break can reach 150%-1060%. Due to its unique chemical structure, it can be used continuously in a wide temperature range of -76℉(-60°)~482℉(200°) and remains soft and elastic consistently. RTV-1 silicone has strong durability and can resist the corrosive properties of wind and rain, ultraviolet light, or moisture without invading or damaging the substrate. It also has super chemical resistance, making it resistant to most organic or inorganic compounds and some solvents for a long time. By adding a flame retardant filler (aluminum hydroxide), let it forms an inert surface, endowing it with flame retardancy. The introduction of phenyl groups and high-temperature-resistant fillers into the side chains of polysiloxane significantly improves its high-temperature or cold-resistant properties. It also has many unique characteristics such as fast curing, easy fluidity, low cost, antifatigue, easy to use, and excellent resilience in compression or stretching.

Why RTV-1 silicone?

RTV-1 silicone can be used in bonding and sealing in various fields, mainly benefiting from its excellent heat resistance and chemical stability. It is mainly used as a sealing material for houses, roads, and concrete and has excellent aging resistance and adhesive properties so that various buildings can resist wind and rain, corrosive liquids, and stress caused by temperature and structural changes. RTV-1 silicone has elastic properties which is a toughness elastomer with the characteristics of absorbing vibration and relieving impact, it is often used for the protection and sealing of electronic components and semiconductor materials. Because RTV-1 silicone has excellent oil resistance, is easy to use and its molding is not limited by molds, so it is widely used in automotive flat sealing parts, such as gearboxes, oil pans, and engine covers. Being its strong radiation resistance and heat resistance, it can withstand long-term severe alternating cold and heat which is used for the sealing of space aerospace windows and windshield glass edges.
