What is Phenyl Methyl Silicone Oil?

Phenyl methyl silicone oil, also known as phenylmethyl silicone oil, is a linear siloxane polymer with phenyl chains added to the side chain of polydimethylsiloxane. Its polymer chain changes from flexibility to rigidity with the increase in phenyl content. Specialty silicone oils have properties that traditional simethicone oils cannot meet, providing application-specific characteristics, such as high refractive index, ultra-high temperature resistance, and ultra-low temperature resistance.

Phenylsiloxane polymers have the same repeating main chain Si-O as polydimethylsiloxane, and the side chains contain both methyl functional groups and phenyl functional groups. The refractive index of siloxane polymer increases with the increase of phenyl mole fraction, otherwise, its low-temperature resistance decreases. Substituting some methyl groups with other functional groups (hydrogen, vinyl, hydroxyl) enables the integration of siloxane polymers into other organic materials to obtain certain specific properties.

Unique properties of phenyl methyl silicone oil

The viscosity of phenylmethyl silicone oil usually increases with the increase of the phenyl content of the molecular chain. Due to the high electron cloud density of the phenyl functional groups in the polymer chain, these siloxane polymers are more thermally stable (peaking at 350 °C) and less cold resistant (down to - 100C°), and have stronger UV resistance. The addition of phenyl groups to siloxane polymers improves compatibility with hydrocarbons and imparts ease of compatibility with other silicone polymers.
