                    Silicone Resin

What is a Silicone Resin?

Silicone resin is a low molecular resin synthesized from a three-dimensional siloxane network structure. It is very stable due to the very high Si-O-Si bond energy, which can be used in a wide temperature range, regardless of physical-mechanical properties or chemical properties with little change with temperature. At the same time, silicone resin contains a Si-C bond, which has the characteristics of thermoplasticity, solubility and insulation of inorganic substances. It is usually used in the preparation of silicone coatings, silicone insulating varnishes, silicone adhesives, silicone plastics, etc.

Synonyms: Organopolysiloxane, silicone,polysiloxane resin,organosilicon resin

Silicone resin chemical structure

Silicone resin is usually hydrolyzed by multifunctional organosilanes and water to obtain prepolymers containing Si-OH, Si-OR, Si-H groups, which are further condensed under heating or in the presence of catalysts to form a certain molecular weight Silicone polymer. Silicone resin has a very unique structure, which depends on the selection of silicone monomers with different functionalities during the synthesis process. Commonly used silicone monomers are methylchlorosilane and phenylchlorosilane. According to the number of functional groups in the molecule, organosilicon monomers can be divided into monofunctional monomers (R3SiO1/2, M), difunctional monomers (R2SiO, D), and trifunctional monomers (R3SiO3/2, T) and tetrafunctional monomers (SiO4/2, Q). Silicone resin is copolymers of different structures composed of monomers with different functionalities. According to different structural units, they are divided into MQ type, MTQ type, MDQ type, and TQ type silicone resin.

Silicone resin is a kind of the main chain composed of silicon atoms and oxygen molecules. The type and quantity of different organic groups connected to silicon atoms have a great influence on the performance of silicone resin. For example, methyl groups endow silicone resin with hydrophobicity, Mold release, arc resistance, and increased paint film brittleness. The phenyl group imparts improved thermal elasticity to the material, compatibility with other resin materials, and adhesion to substrates. With the increase of phenyl content, the hardness of the paint film will be harder at high temperatures. The introduction of different organic substituents can be roughly divided into phenyl silicone resin, methyl phenyl silicone resin, and methyl silicone resin. There are also organically modified silicone resins.

Silicone resin cure type

The performance of silicone resins depends not only on the composition of the organosilane mixture but also on the curing process. According to the mechanism of crosslinking curing reaction, it can be divided into three types:
★ Condensation cross-linking: Containing hydroxyl groups or other silicon functional groups, in-depth polymerization and cross-linking in the presence of heating or catalysts to form a three-dimensional network structure. It has the advantages of good adhesion, heat resistance, fast curing speed and low cost. Commonly used in coatings and adhesives for electronic components.
★ Platinum addition crosslinking: crosslinking by addition reaction of ≡Si-CH=CH2 group siloxane and ≡Si-H group siloxane in the presence of platinum catalyst. It has the advantages of good adhesion to the same substrate, excellent electrical properties, thermal shock resistance, and thermal conductivity. Commonly used in bushings, heat-resistant coatings, coil impregnation, laminates, adhesives, etc.

★ Peroxide cross-linking: Contains vinyl groups, which are cured into a spatial network structure under heating and peroxide initiation. It has the advantages of good electrical insulation, Waterproof, low-temperature curing, no solvation, and a long storage period. Commonly used in electronic component coatings.

Silicone resin properties

Silicone resin is a class of synthetic polymers with a wide range of properties.
■ Heat resistance: The important characteristics of silicone resin are heat resistance and chemical stability, thanks to the fact that the main chain of the molecule constituting siloxane is -Si-O-bond. The -Si-O- bond is more polar and has a shielding effect on the attached hydrocarbyl group, thus improving oxidation stability. Silicone resin can be continuously exposed below 200℃ without decomposing or turning yellow. If it is used as a base material, by adding high-temperature pigments, the maximum instantaneous temperature can reach 600°C.
■ Weather resistance: After cross-linking, more stable -Si-0-Si-bonds are formed, and it is extremely difficult to generate free radicals and oxidation reactions.
■ Water resistance: The side chain linked to the silicon atom contains a hydrophobic group (methyl group), which makes the surface of the film-forming substance have a strong hydrophobic effect.
■ Insulation: long-term exposure to high temperature and high humidity environment, the electrical properties of silicone resin will not decline significantly.
■ Safety and environmental protection: After the silicone resin is molded, the solvent is completely volatile and non-toxic. Silicone resin is used as a flame retardant material, even under excessive heat conditions, silicone resin will not burn or release harmful substances.
■ In addition to the above outstanding properties, silicone resin also has the characteristics of chemical resistance, mold resistance, salt spray resistance.

Silicone resin uses

MQ silicone resin usually forms a multiphase system with other polymers in order to improve the performance of the polymer and obtain silicone materials with special properties. For example, as an adhesive, add an appropriate amount of MQ silicone resin to obtain a silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with good peel strength. As an adhesive, making adhesive tape, it can be used to bond with solid surfaces such as glass, paper, leather, polyimide, etc. as structural adhesives, commonly used to bond structural materials (aluminum, steel, and concrete) to glass. As a reinforcement, adding silicone resin when making silicone rubber can improve the transparency, adhesive performance, and tear strength of silicone rubber. It can also be used as a surfactant, a modifier for silicone paper treatment, an additive for skin care products, etc.

In order to meet certain special properties, often introduce some specific organic groups to obtain modified silicone resins. Such as modified MQ silicone resin is reactive and sensitive to ultraviolet rays and X-rays. Other modified MQ silicone resins include:
■ Epoxy-modified MQ silicone resin, used as a tackifier and surface treatment agent for coatings.
■ Phenol-modified MQ silicone resin, commonly used in processing and etching integrated circuits.
■ Amino-modified MQ silicone resin, adhesive additives such as sealants.
Silicone heat-resistant coating:
Silicone resin, as a special silicone coating, has unparalleled performance compared with other materials and is extremely versatile, playing a pivotal role in the industry. The most commonly used are silicone heat-resistant coatings and inorganic heat-resistant coatings. Commonly used pure silicone resins are often added with heat-resistant pigments to make more high-temperature-resistant silicone materials, which can be used at 250C°-400C° for a long time. and the heat-resistant peak value of inorganic heat-resistant coatings can reach 1000C°. Different heat-resistant coating performance applications are as follows:
■ As an insulating coating: impregnated coils, glass cloth and bushings, semiconductor components, printed circuit boards, solar cells, and laminated products such as mica and asbestos fibers.
■ As a heat-insulating anti-corrosion coating: aircraft, missiles, boilers, high-temperature reaction equipment, high-temperature furnaces, steam pipes, engine exhaust pipes, etc.
■ As a weather-resistant and heat-resistant coating: agricultural machinery, trucks, iron towers for high-voltage wires, oil drilling equipment, power stations, etc.
■ As waterproof and moisture-proof coatings, building materials, permanent buildings and equipment, etc.
■ As a glass resin coating: plexiglass, glass, windshields on automobiles and aircraft, metalized plastics, etc.
■ As a release agent: release paper tape, plastic molded rubber molds, stainless steel baking pans for cooking, non-stick cookware, oil pans, etc.

In addition, in order to improve the weather resistance, adhesion, mechanical strength, oil resistance, light resistance, chemical resistance and other properties of silicone heat-resistant coatings, alkyd, polyester, epoxy and other resins are often introduced into silicone resins to obtain better performance. modified polymers. Such as alkyd modified silicone resin, the weather resistance is 2-3 times that of unmodified, used for railway bridges, ships, permanent buildings, etc.
