Dimethyl silicone oil is a linear polydimethylsiloxane fluid with trimethylsiloxy as the end-capping group. Hexamethyldisiloxane is prepared by hydrolysis and polycondensation of trimethylchlorosilane. Dimethyl mixed ring (DMC) and hexamethyldisiloxane are put into the reaction kettle. Under the action of the catalyst, DMC occurs a Ring-opening polymerization reaction, and under the action of hexamethyldisiloxane end capping, the initial product is obtained. Finally, through a series of complex procedures for removing low-boiling substances, the low-boiling substances in the outcome are removed to obtain silicone oil.
The main molecular chain of dimethyl silicone oil consists of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, and the side chain is connected to methyl groups through silicon atoms. The Si-O-Si bond angle is large, the intermolecular forces of the dimethyl silicone oil molecule are weak, the molecule is in a helical structure, and the organic group (methyl) can rotate freely. Therefore, it has a series of excellent properties, such as hydrophobicity, high compression resistance, lubricity, electrical insulation, softness, spreadability, smoothness, weather resistance, radiation resistance, chemical inertness, high and low-temperature resistance, High flash point and low surface tension.
The side groups of dimethyl silicone oil are all methyl groups, and the methyl groups are arranged outward and rotate freely around the Si-O bond, which makes dimethyl silicone oil have special properties:
■ Thermal Oxidative Stability: Compared to vegetable oils and mineral oils, dimethicone is very stable in thermal oxidation. Even if the dimethicone oil is continuously heated in the atmospheric environment within 200°C, there will be no obvious change. When heated in rare gas or vacuum, it can withstand more than 300° in a short time, and the main chain Si-O-Si will not be decomposed.
■ Stable viscosity-temperature performance: The force between the methyl silicone oil molecules is very weak, there is no strong polar interaction and the Si-O-Si-bond of the molecular main chain can rotate freely, so the viscosity changes extremely in a wide temperature range are small.
■ Excellent shear resistance: The viscosity of high and low-viscosity dimethyl silicone oil does not change significantly under the action of high shear force. Its shear resistance is more than 20 times that of ordinary mineral oil.
■ Low surface tension: As viscosity increases, the surface tension remains at 20-21mN/m2, which is much lower than that of water (76mN/m2). Low surface tension means higher surface activity. Therefore, it is very easy to spread a film on the surface of the material. It is suitable as water repellent, mold release agent, and defoamer.
■Solubility: Based on the special chemical structure of dimethyl silicone oil, it is a non-polar molecule, easily soluble in non-polar solvents with low solubility (such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chloroform, toluene, xylene, dichloromethane , ether, cyclohexane, kerosene, petroleum ether, gasoline, butanone, etc.), insoluble with water or substances containing polar groups.

Due to its unique molecular structure, polymers with different properties can be prepared by introducing side or terminal organic groups to replace part of the methyl group. For example, dimethyl-emulsified silicone oil is suitable for fabric softening and finishing, it can be used in combination with other additives to improve the smoothness of fabrics and enhance lubricity of fabrics. It is an ideal material for fabric softening and finishing agents.
