Silicone fluid

Silicone liquid can be used as a functional base oil, and other organic groups can be added to improve its performance and be applied to more demanding occasions.
We can provide 1 ~ 1000000cst viscosity silicone oil (dimethyl silicone oil, methyl hydrogen silicone oil, phenyl silicone oil and various modified silicone oils).

What is Silicone fluid?

Silicone fluid, also called silicone oil, is a liquid polysiloxane with a linear, branched, or cyclic molecular structure. Its viscosity increases with the degree of polymerization. The most notable feature of silicone oil is high-temperature stability, which can be used for a long time in an atmospheric environment of 200°-300°. The most common silicone fluid is pure silicone fluid(linear polysiloxane compounds), such as dimethyl silicone oil, ethyl silicone oil, amino terminated silicone oil, methyl toluene silicone oil, methyl hydrogen silicone oil, hydroxyl silicone oil, and vinyl silicone oil. To replace part of the methyl group on the silicon atom with carbon functional groups(chlorine hydrocarbyl, cyanogen alkyl group, hydroxy hydrocarbyl, ammonia hydrocarbyl, mercapto hydrocarbyl, epoxy hydrocarbyl) or an inert group or a polymeric segment, which endow silicone oil with new characteristics. Silicone oil can be used directly as a base oil, or as the main raw material for secondary processing products (silicone emulsion, silicone grease, release agent, anti-adhesive agent, defoamer, and polishing agent).

Silicone fluid chemical structure

Silicone fluid is a silicone polymer that is composed of repeating silicone-oxygen bonds. Compared with carbon-carbon bonds, the silicone-oxygen bonds of its main chain have higher bond energy, longer bonds, and larger bond angles. Polydimethylsiloxane is the Principal member of silicone fluid. Its molecular chain is a flexible and stretchable helical structure, so the methyl group can rotate around the Si-O bond arbitrarily, and the distance between molecules is large, which endows it with high compression resistance, low surface tension, and hydrophobic. Various organic groups and reactive groups are introduced to combine silicone polymers with organic polymers to obtain new properties besides the original silicone polymer.

Silicone fluid properties

Silicone fluid as a base oil (Linear polysiloxane) has many essential properties. Unlike other polymers, it can remain liquid in a wide range of viscosities (1-1000000mm2/s). Due to the small intermolecular force and high surface activity of polydimethylsiloxane, and not compatible with other materials, therefore it imparts excellent spreadability. The thermal conductivity of silicone polymer has good stability, which is almost maintained at 0.14-0.16W/m.k. Since silicone polymer is a non-polar substance, it is easily soluble in non-polar solvents and air, compared with general mineral oil, and it has good solubility. The silicone oil which is modified by chemically modifying shows more new characteristics. A hydrophilic group is added to the side chain, which endows the polyether silicone oil with excellent water solubility. Adding polar amino group which endows the ammonia hydrocarbyl silicone oil with good adsorption properties. Modified silicone oil also has strong antistatic properties and good oxygen permeability, anti-sticking properties, lubricity, and oil and solvent resistance.

What is silicone fluid used for?

The most used silicone fluid in the market is dimethyl silicone fluid(polydimethylsiloxane). Dimethyl silicone oil has certain fundamental properties that make it suitable for use in cosmetics, household goods, electronics, chemical coatings, construction, automotive, machinery, fiber, and paper industries. Because dimethyl silicone fluid has hydrophobicity, after treatment by it, which can form a very thin layer of hydrophobic film, which is used for dustproof and anti-condensation water vapor of automobile glass, ship, and aircraft glass windows. After the paper surface is treated and dried with dimethyl silicone oil solution, it has good hydrophobicity. Leather treated with dimethyl silicone oil has better abrasion resistance and wear resistance, prolonging the service life. Dimethyl silicone oil can also be used as a surface treatment agent to improve the waterproof, anti-corrosion, and anti-frost properties of metals. After adding a small amount of dimethyl silicone oil to the inorganic powder, it can endow the inorganic powder with anti-adhesive properties and improve its compatibility with organic polymers. Adding dimethyl silicone oil can also improve the dispersion of synthetic resins and coatings in organic compounds, and improve the overall performance of coatings. Many new applications require the use of modified silicone fluid with special properties. For example, polyether-modified silicone oil is used as detergents and defoamers for textile industry applications. Long-chain alkyl-modified silicone oil is used as a lubricant or release agent for the lubrication of soft metals, rubber, and plastics.
