What is Silicone Oil?

Silicone oil is a liquid silicone polymer with different degrees of polymerization and molecular chain structures. Its most outstanding characteristic is that it still maintains excellent thermal stability even in ultra-high temperature situations. The most representative silicone oil is polydimethylsiloxane, whose main molecular chain is a coiled-coil structure, and the methyl group rotates freely around the Si-O bond, which increases the distance between adjacent molecules, makes the intermolecular force smaller, which endows it with excellent low surface tension, air permeability, softness, cold resistance and the characteristic of the viscosity changing little. Polysiloxane compounds can introduce carbon functional groups or organic substituents with specific structures to obtain new physical and chemical properties, which create solutions to various existing and new applications in electrical and electronic, machinery, construction, transportation, agriculture, chemical, medical, health, cosmetic. Common organic substituents include ammonia hydrocarbyl, epoxide hydrocarbyl, hydroxyalkyl group, chlorine hydrocarbyl, carboxyl hydrocarbyl, fluorine hydrocarbyl, long-chain alkyl, and cyanogen hydrocarbyl.

Chemical structure of Silicone Oil

Silicone oil is a polysiloxane compound mainly composed of difunctional units. It is composed of repeating chains composed of silicone-oxygen bonds, and silicone atoms are connected to organic groups such as methyl, hydrogen, ethyl, phenyl, hydroxyl, vinyl, and Alkoxy. The bond energy of the silicone-oxygen bond of the siloxane polymer reaches 106.2kcal/mol, endowing it with excellent heat resistance. It can obtain siloxane polymers with different degrees of polymerization by changing the ratio of monofunctional, difunctional, and trifunctional units, and its viscosity also increases with the increase of the degree of polymerization. Introducing active groups such as carbon functional groups into organosilicon compounds allows polysiloxane polymers to be copolymerized with other organic substances, endowing it with unique properties and specific end uses. Common modified silicone oil include polyether polymer, ammonia hydrocarbyl polymer, epoxide hydrocarbyl polymer, mercaptoalkyl polymer, hydroxyalkyl group polymer, chlorine hydrocarbyl polymer, long-chain alkyl polymer, mercaptoalkyl polymer, cyanoalkyl polymer, fluorine hydrocarbyl polymer, and cyanogen hydrocarbyl polymer.

Unique properties of silicone oil

Silicone oil is an oily polymer. The state of silicone polymer changes from clear to viscous as the silicone polymer viscosity increases. The commonly used viscosity is 1 to 1000000cst, and there is almost no change in the application of a wide temperature range. Silicone polymer has high shear resistance, even under high shear force, the viscosity is only temporarily reduced, and the viscosity can recover quickly after the shear stress is removed, and the shear resistance is much higher than that of mineral oil. The main chain bonded by the silicon-oxygen bond has high bond energy, and the siloxane compound can operate normally for a long time in a high-temperature atmospheric environment of 200°C. High phenyl silicone oil formed by substituting methyl groups on the side chains of polysiloxane compounds with phenyl groups can withstand a high temperature of 450°C for a short time in a closed system, and has higher thermo-oxidative stability than vegetable oils and minerals sex. Low phenyl silicone oil has excellent cold resistance and fluidity even at -70C°. Since the bond length and bond angle of polysiloxane compounds are larger than those of carbon-carbon bonds, the combination is more supple. Compared with general synthetic oils, it is easier to spread on the surface of materials, showing lower surface tension and higher Surfactant. Siloxane polymer is an inert substance with excellent safety and environmental protection, chemical stability, and material compatibility, and has almost no corrosion and adverse effects on metals and most plastics. Polysiloxane compounds have good thermal expansion, which decreases with the increase of viscosity, which is consistent with the expansion rate of benzene. It also has good dielectric properties, and the dielectric constant, volume resistivity and dielectric loss tangent which are almost constant over a wide temperature range. Commonly used as a cooling medium and insulating oil. With the increase of phenyl content, the radiation resistance of silicone polymer is stronger, and it can be used in high-temperature radiation places. In addition, modified silicone oil is formed by substituting some methyl groups on silicon atoms with specific organic groups, therefore it has stronger adsorption, lubricity, mold release, softness, weather resistance, antistatic, and hydrophobicity.

What is silicone oil used for?

Silicone oil has many unique properties and is used in cosmetics, transportation, electronic engineering, medical and health, machinery, textiles, and other occasions.

Advantages and applications of polydimethylsiloxane:

Cosmetic
It is commonly used for component compatibility in personal care. The medium-viscosity silicone polymer has excellent low surface tension and lubricity, which promotes the easy dispersion of some components of cosmetics on the human epidermis and expands into a thin film, which has moisturizing and protective effects on the skin. Low-viscosity polysiloxane compound is easily volatile in body shampoos and antiperspirant lotions, endowing quick-drying, smooth, glossy, anti-fouling, properties. Add methyl hydrogen silicone oil to make-up cosmetics to prevent agglutination. Add silicone polymer which has combing properties to hair cream and hair oil to make hair softer and smoother. Silicone polymer is added to the shaving cream to buffer the friction between the skin and the blades and protect the skin.

Medicine
In ointment, silicone oil can form a hydrophobic film on the surface of the skin to prevent dryness and cracking of the skin and has little effect on the skin's respiration.

Food
In food processing, they have heat resistance and anti-sticking properties and can be used as a release agent to make food easy to take out and can be cycle used, saving time and reducing production costs.

Electronics
It has good flame retardancy and dielectric properties, which can be used as an additive for insulating materials.

Chemical
It can be used as an additive for chemical raw materials. Adding an appropriate amount of silicone polymer in rubber processing can endow the rubber with aging resistance and wear resistance. In plastic processing, it can reduce the surface tension of parts and make them easy to release from the mold. Added in paint processing, it can promote the color uniformity of the paint and impart brightening properties.

Automobile
Use diluted silicone oil (non-ionic emulsion) as a polishing agent to improve the gloss of automotive parts.

Mechanical
With excellent thermal stability and chemical inertness, it can be used as diffusion pump oil, lubricating oil, shockproof oil, buffer damping fluid, heat transfer oil, transformer oil, high vacuum diffusion pump oil, etc.

Textile
As a softening agent used in fabrics, to make the fabrics have good softness and improve the wrinkle resistance, abrasion resistance and smoothness of the fabrics.

Architecture
After its treatment, the water repellency and wind erosion resistance of the building can be improved.

It can also be used as a defoamer for secondary processed products and a paper release agent.

Advantages and applications of modified silicone oil:

Polyether polymer is used as a wetting agent in agriculture, circuit board printing, photography, fabrics.
Ammonia hydrocarbyl polymer is used as a modifier for resins and coatings.
Methyl long-chain alkyl polymer has good compatibility with organic materials and can be used as an internal release agent for rubber and plastics.
Hydroxyalkyl polymer can be used as an additive for coatings and pigments.
