What is Liquid Silicone Rubber?

Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is a low-viscosity (with some fluidity before vulcanization), two-component platinum catalytic silicone rubber elastomer. A component is a functional polymer containing vinyl and platinum catalyst, and B component is a cross-linking agent and inhibitor containing hydride. It is stored in two independent barrels respectively and pumped to a static mixer with a certain proportion of mixture in the external after accurate measurement. It is vulcanized by a liquid injection molding process without the need for secondary vulcanization.

Heat curing silicone rubber

Liquid silicone rubbers are also heat-cured rubbers, and their viscosity and crosslinking properties make them materials with special processing advantages. Compared with solid silicone rubber (HTV), it is characterized by low viscosity. Liquid silicone rubber is a two-component blend with pumpability. Liquid silicone rubber is cured by addition crosslinking, and its A component contains a platinum catalyst and the B component contains a SiH functional polysiloxane that acts as a crosslinking agent. Unlike peroxide crosslinking, liquid silicone rubber does not produce any crosslinker by-products when cured.

Liquid Silicone Rubber Properties

Liquid silicone rubber is based on a silicon-oxygen bond (-Si-O-Si-) as the main chain structure. The Si-O bond has much higher energy than the C-C bond, and its unique molecular structure makes liquid silicone rubber more excellent than ordinary rubber after vulcanization.
 

High and low-temperature resistance: The main chain of liquid silicone rubber is -Si-O-, the chemical bonds of molecules will not be broken or decomposed under high temperature or high radiation, and it has better thermal stability than other silicone materials so that liquid silicone rubber can withstand more wide temperature range. Even at -50℃-300℃, the chemical properties and physical and mechanical properties change very little with temperature.

Weather resistance: In harsh environments (such as high temperatures, and high radiation), it is not easy to be decomposed by ultraviolet light or ozone, not easy to be oxidized, and has better radiation resistance and weather resistance than other materials.
Good electrical insulation properties: dielectric strength ≥ 20kV/mm, electrical insulation properties vary little by temperature and frequency.
Excellent biocompatibility: Polysiloxane compounds are one of the most inactive chemicals. They are physiologically inert, non-toxic, odorless, non-rejecting when in contact with human tissues, not easy to be infected with, and have good biocompatibility and anticoagulant properties. Due to these properties, liquid silicone rubber is widely used in medical products for external use (catheters, cannulas, pain relief pumps, etc.) and short-term indwelling in vivo (intravenous catheters, urinary catheters, math museums, chest drainage tubes, nasal cannulae, etc.).
High optical transparency:The light transmittance is as high as 95%, and it is resistant to UV and blue light, which solves the problem of lens yellowing.
Excellent self-adhesive:No primer pretreatment is required to achieve good adhesion to PC, PA, PBT, PPSU, PEEK, TPU, PET, PI substrates, or metals.

Benefits of Liquid Silicone Rubber

Clean and stable: Liquid silicone rubber is free of solvents and moisture, and does not pollute the environment. The compound is supplied in two components, both filtered and exhausted. The two-component mixture can be stored at room temperature for 24 hours after class and can be stored for 2 days after cooling.

Lower molding temperature: The molding temperature of solid silicone rubber is usually 170-200 degrees, while the molding temperature of liquid silicone rubber is 100-130 degrees, which can be quickly cured to shorten the molding cycle. Although solid silica gel is also catalyzed by platinum, the molding temperature is limited, so the liquid silicone rubber material is the best choice for silicone-coated silicone rubber and silicone rubber composite products.

Shorter cure times: Liquid silicone rubber cures in seconds. The curing time is only one-tenth of that of solid silicone products, and no secondary vulcanization is required. Therefore, the production cycle is greatly shortened and the production efficiency is greatly improved;

Energy saving: Because the liquid silicone rubber adopts a simple injection molding process and the vulcanization equipment is an injection machine, it can save 75% of energy consumption.

The high degree of automation and low cost: only one worker is needed for the processing and production of liquid silicone rubber. For example, the cost can be reduced by 42% based on 6g of finished products.
